So, the sermon was too long. Monday January 13th, 2002

Oh how often I hear comments on how long the sermon was. How the pastor went on for twenty whole minutes, twenty minutes without even a break. Today, we shall take a little time to look back in the book of Acts.

And on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached to them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his semon until midnight.

And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, having fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, Eutychus sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. And Paul went down, and lay on him, and embracing him said, "Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him." When Paul therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and preached a long while longer, even until the break of day, when Paul departed.

And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted. (Acts 20:7-12)

Let's look a little closer. Paul started preaching when? "And on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached to them " So, Paul started early Sunday, before communion, which was commonly served before the noon day mean.

And how long was Paul planning on staying? " ready to depart on the morrow;" Paul was planning on leaving some time the next day.

So, there was Paul, just preaching away when suddenly he must have heard either a thump or a gasp from the congregation, for like today, even back then some people just can not stay awake in church. "And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, having fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, Eutychus sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead."

I once asked if your church would welcome Paul to preach, many said "Oh yes". Yet in the same churches that said "Oh yes", I have seen the hymns cut to the first and last verse or the first, third and last verses. I was once severely criticized for preaching forty five minutes, another church told me that I had to keep it down to fifteen minutes, otherwise the fellowship hour suffered.

More often than not, I have looked out only thirty or forty minutes into the sermon and seen men, young and old, sound asleep. Fortunately for them, none has ever fallen three floors and died, for unlike Paul, I have not had any experience in raising the dead. But, happily for young Eutychus Paul was. "And Paul went down, and lay on him, and embracing him said, "Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him." When Paul therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and preached a long while longer, even until the break of day, when Paul departed..

And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted. "

So, the next time the service runs over the one hour allocated to the Lord God Creator of the Universe and all things in it, think about Eutychus, think about Paul who preached twelve, fifteen, eighteen or maybe even twenty hours.

But, please, as summer approaches and you start to think about having me preach in your church, please, please don't even think about being there less than three hours. For my sermons never last less than an hour and I love the hymns to much to sing only verses one, three and five. And if you do come to a service in which I am the preacher and you know you can not stay awake through a sixty or ninety minute sermon, don't sit in the balcony.

The Lord be with you all, all who look forward to spending eternity with He whom they find hard to spend even an hour a week with now. Amen.

God blessed America when she feared Him, now it appears, she may face His wrath.
