What a Friend I have in Jesus... Monday January 24th, 2005
The song you have playing in the background is entitled "What a Friend we have in Jesus." It is a nice song, don't you think? Doesn't it bring a certain peace to you, knowing that you have such a wonderful, all forgiving, all caring, all willing to serve you Friend?
Let's take a minute to read the words to this beautiful song that brings us so much peace.
What A Friend We Have In Jesus
By: Joseph Scriven and Charles C. Converse
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry ev'rything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In His arms He'll take and shield thee, thou wilt find a solace there.
You know, if the song were simply entitled "What a Lord we have in Jesus.", or what a Master we have in Jesus.", or "what a Creator we have in Jesus.", I would have no problems with this hymn. It is that first sentence and title that causes me such concern, for to call Jesus your friend is blasphemy. That's right, you are committing blasphemy when you call the Creator of all heaven and earth, your friend, (have you ever read Exodus 20:7?). For while it is fine for the Master to call the servant friend, brother, or slave, for it is the Masters prerogative to call the slave whatsoever He would like. But, can the slave take it upon himself to call his Master by His first name or simply go up to Him and refer to Him as 'Friend"?
This morning, I would like you to read carefully and ponder on what you read till you have a true understanding of Just who Jesus is. Especially those of you who are not sure you will live another 24 hours, which I might remind you, is all of us. For it is written: And he(the farmer) said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.' But God said unto him, 'Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?' (Luke 12:18-20 ACP/KJV)
So you see, none of us can be sure that, just because we are healthy, strong and young, that we will live another minute, never mind 24 hours. So all of us should study and understand just who Christ Jesus is. And no where in the Bible is there a better explanation than that in which we find written by the Apostle whom Jesus loved, John. By the way, there is nowhere that you will ever find anyone in the Bible calling Jesus 'Friend".
In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same (Jesus) was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him (Jesus); and without Him was not any thing made that was made.
In Him was life; and the life was the Light of men. And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe. He (John) was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own(the Jews), and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of Him, and cried, saying, "This was He of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for He was before me." And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him. (John 1:1-18 ACP/KJV)
In the 18 verses above, with the help of the Holy Spirit, you will come to realize that Christ Jesus is not your friend, but instead your Master, you Creator, your God. You are not His peer, you are not His equal, you are His creation and you were created by Him for His pleasure, not for Him to take you swimming or fishing. If you are a faithful creation, slave, bond servant, worker, here on earth during this lifetime, you will be His adopted Brother and co-ruler with Him in heaven, not just His friend, but His adopted brother, His co-ruler. But, in order to be a Co-Ruler with Jesus, and adopted son of God the Father, and adopted brother of God the Son, you must first be a true Born Again washed clean by the Blood of Jesus, Christian. And in order to do that, you have to understand just who it is you serve.
My dear boys and girls, men and women, do not fall for the liberal slant on God, go to the Lord in prayer asking Him to help you understand and then read John 1, verses 1-18 till you start to see the picture of just who Christ Jesus is. When you deal with God, always approach with fear, wonder, love and a honest desire to serve Him. Ere on the side of caution. In closing let me ask you this question. Would your dad or mom let you get away with calling them by their first name? Would you dad let you refer to your mom as nothing more than 'friend'? Would your mom let you get away with saying "I don't have to obey ---(insert your fathers first name)---, he is only my friend."?
Well if you can not get way with treating your earthy dad and mom so callously, what gives you the idea that you can treat God with such contempt and with so little respect and get away with it?
I remember a woman who, according to her will, left her estate and eight million dollars to her cats. in her words "My children never showed me any respect." She allowed her children, in her will, to care for the cats, be cook, maid, house cleaner etc. So that they could live in the estate, but, they had no control over the estate or the money, the lawyer did. All moneys expended had to be justified as being needful for the cats.
Lord Jesus, help us to grasp our relationship with You, help us to understand that till we are there with You, we are on trial, and that You will judge whether we are truly worthy to be called Your adopted brother or sister, the micro second after we die. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" Thank You Lord Jesus, amen.

May the Lord understand the importance of Mac, Cecily, Steve, and Rev. Jim Marstaller to this ministry. Lord I need them both healthy and able to continue to hold up their ends. Lord this cancer of Mac's is starting to get in the way, this ministry needs him whole, just a thought Lord, is all it will take, just a thought on Your part.
There is a young man, a veteran who suffers from some kind of chemical weapon exposure, in a Veterans hospital in Colorado, he is young, and he is Saved, yet his wife just abandoned him. Please pray for him, Lord, help him and deal with her and those who hurt him, we ask this of the Father in Your name Lord Jesus, amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and bless you all, amen.
The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."
Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.
It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.
All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
