Why to read and study your Bible. Monday January 27th, 2003
Today, I am going to try to get you to understand the importance of reading and studying your Bible. We are going to look at one of Paul's letters to the church at Thessalonica. As you will see, this was a pretty solid church, it was a church that Paul and others were able to point their fingers at and use as an example. The faith and dedication of the Thessalonians was evidently known far and wide.
Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: (1 Thessalonians 2:1-4)
Now, read it like this:
From; Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus,
to; The church of the Thessalonians,
In God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Brothers in the Lord, we are bound to thank God always for you, as is only just and right, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you toward each other abounds. So much so that we ourselves glory in you while we are in the other churches of God. We tell and give thanks for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that which you endure, both persecution and tribulations:
So, as you can see, the church at Thessalonica was a pretty solid church, yet, as we are about to see, even this solid Christ centered church was able to be fooled.
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him. That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? (2 Thessalonians 2:1-5)
Ok now read it like this:
Now we beseech you, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the bringing of His bride to Him:
So that your not, mislead or troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, not even by letter that seems to come from us, for as of that day, the day the Lord raptures His church, while it is at hand, it has not yet come. Therefore, let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, until there first is a huge leaving by so called followers of Christ from the true word of God to false teachings, lies and religions based upon works and other things, things other than the promise of salvation by the Blood of Christ, through the Grace of God. We, will know for that man of sin will be revealed, the son of perdition; the one who will oppose God and exalt himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he while acting as God will sit in the temple of God, making many believe that he is God.
Don't you remember that when I was still with you, I told you these things?
So, you see, that even though the Thessalonians were solid, because they had gotten away from studying the truth, the word of God as Paul had originally relayed it to them, they had been deceived. And that is why you must study the Word of God and His word, the Holy Bible on your own. No man is infallible, no man can preach God's word so that all will understand what he is saying all the time, it is for that very reason that God has made each mans salvation his own responsibility and not placed that burden upon those of us who preach His word.
You and I have a huge advantage over the church of the Thessalonians, while they had Paul in person, we have the Holy Bible. How many Bibles do you have in your home? How often do you wear one out? As I look around at various churches and groups of Christians, I see brand new Cadillacs, Lincolns and Mercedes Benzes, I also see 25 and 30 year old pickups on bald tires. What that tells me is that Christians in this country are not very good at being good stewards of that which the Lord has entrusted many with, for they seem to want to keep this material wealth for themselves.
If you refuse to be a good Steward with the riches of this world, the material things of this world that God has entrusted you with, will you at least be a good steward with His holy Word, the Bible? Do you have any idea how many men and women died horrible deaths so that you could have that little book?
The Lord be with you all, and may you all spend at least ten minutes this very day in prayerful study of the word of God, getting to know the Word better. Amen.
