Today's Christian thought: Thursday January 29th, 2004
Today we are going to be in Matthew chapter ten. In it, you will find tons of great stuff. But there are two things I would like you to think about in particular. First, let's read chapter ten and then let's go back over two points I would like you to really concentrate on.
Matthew Chapter Ten
1 And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as ye go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. 9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. 12 And when ye come into an house, salute it. 13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. 17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; 18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for My sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. 19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. 22 And ye shall be hated of all men for My name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. 23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of Man be come.
24 The disciple is not above his Master, nor the servant above his Lord. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his Master, and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of His household?
26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. 27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for My sake shall find it. 40 He that receiveth you receiveth Me, and he that receiveth Me receiveth Him (God the Father) that sent Me. 41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. (Matthew 10:1-42 ACP/KJV)
Alright, there is so much to talk about in Matthew Ten that we could spend months on it, but, as I said in the beginning of the year, this year we are going to try to look at a chapter a day. Giving you and your family something to discuss each night. So, let's start with verses 11-14:
And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
As we look at these verse, verses given as instructions to the Apostles as they went on their first attempt on their own to evangelize, we see some things, that we as Christians, need to keep in mind as we evangelize. "And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy" When you are looking for one to tell about the love and salvation of the Lord, look for someone you like, someone you would not want to see left behind if the Lord Raptured His church that night. If you're not sure who to approach, ask your wife and kids. Just ask them, say; "Hey, who do you think we should invite to church with us this Sunday?" Or, "Who do you think we should invite over to watch the *Jesus film?" Or even, "Kids, is there any of your friends who you kinda figure are headed in the wrong way?" * The Jesus film, not this new thing put out by Mel Gibson.
" and there abide till ye go thence." Once you have selected a likely individual or two, stay with them, don't just say "You know, God says if you're not Born Again, you're goin ta hell." No, once you choose a person or two to evangelize plan on spending some time with them spent on letting them not only hear how Jesus has changed your life but see it as well.
"And when ye come into an house, salute it." Always remember to be polite, but remember, a salute is a two way thing, the private salutes the general with due respect the general returns the salute with authority. So, always be polite, but never forget that you represent the Lord God of Creation when you are evangelizing. You are His spokesperson, His representative, His envoy.
"And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you." There will come a time while you are evangelizing that person, that you must decide if he, she or they are hearing you or are only in it for the coffee hour. If they are worthy, stay with them, if they are unworthy, you can, if you so choose remain friends, but it is time to go on to the next person on your list.
"And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet." There will be those who will twist your words, insult you and simply make your life miserable. When you find one like that, leave, leave and turn them over to the Lord, for remember, it is not you they are rejecting, it is the Lord God of Creation, Christ Jesus they are rejecting. So, Let God deal with them. "Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city."
Now, the next verses we are going to look at, may seem to you to be totally unrelated, but it is not. It is in fact a dire warning to all who step out into the secular world to evangelize. It is a warning as to why you should not look to conquer the abortionist, but the friend who is simply lost, a nice guy going to hell.
Verse 33: But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven!
As you are evangelizing, you are going to find that satan knows about it and that he is not going to turn loose of your friend easily. The evil one is going to put words and thoughts into your friend's mind, these thoughts are not only there to try and convince your friend to stay unsaved, but to cause you to deny Christ. That's right, satan is going to use your friend, the one whose soul you are trying to rescue, to try tocause you to deny Christ. I am not going to give you examples of what satan will cause your friend to say or do, I am simply going to make you aware that it will happen, not that it might happen, but that it will happen.
What do you do to avoid the trap, laid out by satan using your friend as bait, to avoid denying Jesus? You pray, you use Scripture and you never ever under any circumstances make up Scripture. Never, never, never! There will be times, especially if you are talking to a person who was raised Roman Catholic, liberal small c Christian or Jewish where they will say something, something they have heard in their church or synagogue, something they were lead to believe was Scripture, that is not.
Let me give you and example of that, in the Book of Daniel, the Roman Catholic church has added something like 72 verses, they have added what they claim to be a prayer spoken by Daniel. If the person you are reaching out to starts quoting that prayer, you must always have your bible on hand to look at. Never under any circumstances settle for the Bible used by a non saved person.
When you accept the words written in a cult's bible, as the Word of God, you are denying the Word of God, by accepting the cults words instead. The RC's the Mormons, the Jehovah Witnesses and many others worship a different Jesus that we do. They have denigrate Jesus to be less than God. Some make Him a nice guy, others make others make His earthly mother, Mary, His equal.
Keep in mind, satan is subtle, or at least he is most of the time. Let me leave you with this thought about satan and his ability, it was through the corruption of Scripture that he trapped and corrupted Adam and Eve.
So always start by giving the person you are evangelizing a brand new KJV of their very own, complete with and inscription to them on the front page. Second pray, pray, and pray. Never be far from the Lord when you are doing His work. Now go back and read Matthew Ten again, but this time as your read it, look for the instructions the Lord is giving you on how to evangelize and why.
Guys, this part is hard: "And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city." I know, I have had to do it. There have been men in my life who I worked with for years and then one day I came to realize that I was spinning my wheels and wasting my time, for they by their actions, words and/or behavior proved, to me and a witness, that they were, while acting as if accepting, in fact rejecting every principal of Christ. Does that mean they are going to eternal damnation? No, that means that I simply said: "Lord, I can't seem to reach this person, could You assign someone else please." Remember you are God's representative, when you get over your head, turn it back to Him.
May our Lord, Christ Jesus, be with you and yours, may He protect you and give you peace and comfort in His word. May He give you understanding and a burning hunger for His word. And may He bless you and yours abundantly, giving you and understanding of how and what to do with the things and gifts He has given you. Amen.
Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush and Michael have, they, Rush, Michael and their audiences need the Lord.
Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.
It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.
All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
