How to separate the seeker from the non-seeker John 3:1-21
Keyword: The Chronological order of the life of Our Christ

Over the years I have come to realize that every question we could possibly have is answered within the pages of the Holy Bible. Somewhere between the "In the beginning"of Genesis chapter one and the "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.Amen." of Revelation 22:21 lies the answer, for those who are truly Born Again Washedin the Blood of the Lamb Christians, for every question. All we need to do is go to the Lord, ask His help (Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. James 4:3) and then let the Holy Spirit guide us to the answer, immediately or in His time.

Today, I am going to give you an example of what I mean. The question is: How do you know if a person is really seeking the Lord and salvation or just playing games or even worse looking for a way to undermine you, your faith, and perhaps even those around you? The answer is found in Scripture, as we will see, in John chapters three and eight where we see one who is really seeking and ones who are working for satan and trying to undermine.

First let us look at John 3:1-21

John Chapter Three 1-21

1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, "Rabbi, we know that Thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with him." 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, 'Ye must be born again.' 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9 Nicodemus answered and said unto Him, "How can these things be?" 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, *We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him (Jesus) should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that Light(Jesus) is come into the world, and men loved darkness (satan) rather than Light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the Light(Christ), neither cometh to the Light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. (John 3:1-21 ACP/KJV)

Now let's look at the way this true seeker, Nicodemus, comes seeking and his responses.

Nicodemus, a member of the Sanhedrin comes to Jesus at night, and he says. "Master, we know You are a teacher who has been sent by God, for no one other than one really sent by God could do the miracles You do." Nicodemus, while not sure Jesus is the Messiah, knows full well that He is not just some Rabbi, he knows that Jesus is very special, very, very special, a man sent by God.

Jesus then says to Nicodemus, "Nicodemus, listen to Me very carefully for what I am about to tell you is how you or anyone can get into heaven. Listen very carefully, for what I am about to tell you is the one and only way, there is no other way, it is only this one way that anyone can get into heaven. All who try some other way will spend eternity in the lake of fire."

At this point, Nicodemus is leaning forward, he is all ears, he is on fire, he wants to know this one and only way more than anything else. And Jesus says: "Nicodemus, unless a man is born again, he can not even see the inside of heaven!"

Nicodemus is devastated, he is crying, he is broken hearted as he cries out to the Lord: "Lord, Lord, how, how can a man be born again? How can he go back into his mothers womb and be born again? Oh Lord, what about me, I am 67 years old, my mother has been dead 10 years, how can I be born again?, how can I go back into her womb?, am I destined for the lake of fire, Oh Lord, please, please, help me."

The above is how Nicodemus, the one seeking salvation and life eternal with God, approached and questioned, and received answers. Notice the contrite and broken spirit of Nicodemus. And that is the way a seeker today will approach you looking for Christ, if he or she really wants to know how to attain eternal salvation.

Now let's look at how it happens when the person is not trying to find salvation, but is instead just looking to kill time, or find a way of arguing or even trying to weaken the faith of you or others who might be listening.

Again we only need to go to Scripture.

Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down, and taught them.

And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto Him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, they say unto Him; "Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest Thou?"

This they said, tempting Him, that they might have to accuse Him. (John 8:1-6a ACP/KJV)

Here we have a bunch of non believers, not seekers, coming to the Lord, in a crowd, not seeking salvation, but seeking to embarrass Him, to show Him up, to shake the faith of those who had come to hear and learn from Jesus. Do you see the difference between the pharisees above in John 8, verses Nicodemus the pharisee in John 3?

All too often, in our zest to evangelize, in our zest to bring people to the Lord, in our zest to introduce folks to the Lord and give them the good news of the Gospel, we find ourselves dealing with the tricksters of John 8, instead of John 3, Nicodemus. We must be careful, we must be as Jesus says "Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves, for Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves:" (Matthew 10:16 ACP(in today's sentence structure)/KJV)

Listen carefully to the questions of those who you are evangelizing. Are they questions or are they statements that they claim are questions? Visualize the look of horror on Nicodemus's face when Jesus said to him, "You must be born again", verses the smug look on the faces of the pharisees' faces as they said to Jesus: "Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest Thou?" Always judge which of the two categories those you are evangelizing fall into.

Picture the scene of John 8 in your mind. They dragged this poor woman before Him because she had been caught in the very act of adultery. How do you think she was dressed? Do you think she was deathly afraid and embarrassed as she was dragged through Jerusalem to the Lord in little more than a night gown? And here she is cowering like a trapped, helpless, little babe in the womb who is about to be killed, and they smirkingly look at the Lord with this look in their eyes, of "Now we have You, You'll not escape our verbal trap this time," and they say, snidely "Master!" Jesus looks at them with a knowing look, and they continue, "See this woman? Well we caught her in the very act of adultery! Now, in the law of Moses, the penalty for adultery is stoning. We caught her, there is no doubting it, look at all the witnesses. Now, Mr. Smartypants, what do You say? Are You subject to Moses' law or are You going to try something? Do we stone her or not?" These men are not seeking Christ, they are not seeking salvation, they are trying to undermine the faith of all who are there, they are trying to shake the weak.

I want you to read how Jesus handled these corrupters of the word of God:

He didn't argue with them, He didn't give them time to speak, He simply confronted them: But Jesus stooped down, and with His finger wrote on the ground, as though He heard them not. But when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. (John 8:6b&7 ACP/KJV)

So, just as Scripture teaches us to go and preach the Gospel to every creature, it also warns us about not getting trapped by those whose goal is to undermine. The true and honest seeker is looking for salvation, the antagonizer is looking for an argument and a chance to make you look the fool and shake your faith. The true seeker may sound like an antagonizer, and may even seem belligerent, but the true seeker is sent by God and will not be trying to weaken the faith of you or others by making statements cloaked as questions.

Remember, if the question reminds you of how a lawyer tries to cloak his statements by asking leading or confusing questions, then the chances are really good he or she is an antagonizer sent by satan, not a seeker sent by the Holy Ghost.

The antagonizer is looking for a chance to ask a question that is a trap, a question that cannot be answered, a question like the one asked by a reporter to a political candidate the reporter hated. "Tell me Mr. Candidate, are you still beating your wife?"

Jesus knows the world, He knows what we are up against as we seek to get the Gospel to every man, woman and child, but He also knows that not all who claim to seek are really seeking, so He ``warns us. "be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves, for I am sending you out as a lamb amongst wolves".

Evangelizing is not easy my friends, but it is always worth the risk, but make sure that risk does not weaken the faith of any around you, that the one you are evangelizing cannot, with his questions, plant seeds of misunderstanding of scripture in the minds of those around you.

May You Jesus, my Lord, my Saviour, my Master be with all who seek to do Your will by going forth and preaching Your word. Protect them and guide them I beseech Thee, for they are the ones who take the risk, they are they are the ones who follow and try to abide in and do Thy will. It is Thee Lord whom , like You, I love, they whom I look forward to sharing our eternity with. Amen.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.
