Today's Christian thought: Tuesday February 3rd, 2004
Today we are going to delve into Matthew chapter twelve. Chapter twelve is a study of how Jesus handled the legalistics of His day. It is a chapter that holds immense relevance today as it did back then, for today it is often times that we find good churches accused, by the liberals, of being too legalistic. Today we will see that those who were, and are today, to legalistic, are those who ignore the teachings of the Bible and instead put to much importance on commentary.
Remember back in Matthew 5:18, we read these words spoken by the Lord: For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Well today in chapter 12, we are going to see the importance of studying Scripture yourself in prayer, and not getting carried away with what others tell you scripture means.
Matthew Chapter Twelve
1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and His disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto Him, "Behold, Thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day." Now it wasn't illegal to eat on the sabbath, it was illegal to pick the food you were eating. This verse carries immense insight into the religious leaders of the day. Like today the religious leaders were so involved in studying what others had written about what God said and meant to say that they missed that God was there amongst them.
3 But He said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? (Read 1 Samuel 21) Like Doeg, the Edomite these religious leaders were to intent on obeying the rules of man to see that the rules of God were being clarified.
6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I WILL HAVE MERCY, AND NOT SACRIFICE (Hosea 6:6; Micah 6:6-8) , ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. Here Jesus is telling them that He is God, that if they would simply study the Scriptures they would know it and then they would not be condemning the guiltless, those with him who were plucking and eating grains of wheat.
9 And when He was departed thence, He went into their synagogue: 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked Him, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days?" that they might accuse Him. 11 And He said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith He to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against Him, how they might destroy Him. 15 But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew Himself from thence: and great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all; 16 And charged them that they should not make Him known: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias (Isaiah) the prophet, saying, 18 BEHOLD MY (God the Father) SERVANT (Jesus), WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN; MY BELOVED, IN WHOM MY SOUL IS WELL PLEASED: I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM, AND HE SHALL SHEW JUDGMENT TO THE GENTILES (all who were not Jews). 19 HE SHALL NOT STRIVE, NOR CRY; NEITHER SHALL ANY MAN HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS. 20 A BRUISED REED SHALL HE NOT BREAK, AND SMOKING FLAX SHALL HE NOT QUENCH, TILL HE SEND FORTH JUDGMENT UNTO VICTORY. 21 AND IN HIS NAME SHALL THE GENTILES TRUST. I know that as we read these verses we find it incredible that anyone could want to condemn or harm the Lord. After all, look at all the miracles He was doing. Yet, were these religious leaders any more blinded than the religious leaders today of the liberal small c Christian churches? Look at the things Roman Catholics believe in, look at bishops in the Episcopalian church who make statements about how the bible does not address homosexuality. Look at the churches who ordain women, and look at to days' jews, how they celebrate the Passover each year, yet fail to or refuse to see that it is proof positive that Jesus is indeed the Messiah.
22 Then was brought unto Him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and He healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, "Is not this the son of David?" 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils." Do you see what happened here? Those who saw the things that Jesus did and were not so hung up on commentary that they were blinded to the truth said. Look, this is God. While the religious leaders said, oh, he does this through the power of satan. Read your bible literally, take every word in your bible as if God were speaking it directly to you, always put God's word ahead of any and all commentary.
25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26 And if satan cast out satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. 29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. 30 He that is not with me is against Me; and he that gathereth not with Me scattereth abroad. 31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. These last 8 verses spoken by the Lord should have shaken them to the very foundations of their bones. First the Lord tells them that what they are saying doesn't make sense, that a kingdom divided is one that can not stand. Then He goes on to say, look, if I chase out devils by the power of satan, who do your children, other religious leaders, chase them out by? He then goes on to say, look, you have accused Me of having satan dwelling within Me, Scripture teaches you that God has put His Holy Spirit within Me, your speaking out against Me can be forgiven, but your speaking out against the Holy Spirit within Me can not be forgiven.
33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. We, each of us, every man, women, and child on earth decides for him or herself whether they will be a good tree or a evil tree. Your actions will then tell the word which you chose to be.
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. As you speak it becomes apparent whether you have decided to bad a good tree or an evil tree, as others speak, you can determine which they choose to be, a good tree or an evil tree. Sometimes it is hard to decided for some people seem to speak out of two sides of their mouth at the same time. But, never judge based upon the morals of men, but by the teachings of your KJV bible.
38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, "Master, we would see a sign from Thee." Now, Jesus, being God knew they were going to say that, but can you imagine the expression on the faces of all those with Him when the religious leaders of the day said: "Master, we would see a sign from Thee."
39 But He answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. 42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. But Jesus answered them and said, you want a sign, ok, I'll show you a sign, I will be buried for three days and then I will arise out of the grave. Did they understand what He was saying? Did they know right then and there that He was indeed God? Jump ahead of to Matthew 27:60-66. They knew, just like so many know today, but like them of old, many today like this life and it's pleasures more than they have fear of judgement and eternity. And a great deal of the responsibility of that rest squarely on the shoulders of Christians, for if the Christian community did as God ordered, many more people would hear the truth and be saved.
43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, 'I will return into my house from whence I came out;' and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. Absolute proof that some who claim to be saved are not and return from starting on the path to righteousness to a path of evil. And when they do, they are worse than there were before.
46 While He yet talked to the people, behold, His mother and His brethren stood without, desiring to speak with Him. 47 Then one said unto Him, "Behold, Thy mother and Thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with Thee." 48 But He answered and said unto him that told Him, Who is My mother? and who are My brethren? 49 And He stretched forth His hand toward His disciples, and said, Behold My mother and My brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of My Father which is in heaven, the same is My brother, and sister, and mother. Not even being chosen as the mother of God gave Mary automatic salvation, nor did it assure His earthly brothers and sisters of salvation. Look at what Jesus said, look at who He says are His family: "whosoever shall do the will of My Father which is in heaven, the same is My brother, and sister, and mother."
You have just as good a chance as Mary and the half brothers and sisters of the Lord of salvation. All you have to do is the will of God and what is the will of God? Read John 3:1-21. Never forget that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost are all one and the same God.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and guide you all, read His word, study His word, get to know the Word for it is only through the word of the Word that you can be saved. Amen.
Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush and Michael have, they, Rush, Michael and their audiences need the Lord.
Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.
It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.
All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
