Virtue and Modesty

Does God really care how we dress? Yes, He does. He cares about every aspect of our lives. We are called to holiness. Holiness in what we do, what we say, where we go, how we act, how we think, what we listen to, what we read, what we sing, and yes, how we dress. Scripture bears this out.

Ephesians 5:8-10, (KJV)

8: For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10: Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (KJV)

21: Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22: Abstain from all appearance of evil.

1 Peter 1:13-15 (KJV)

13: Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14: As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

For starters. May God give us both the desire and the wisdom to live lives that are holy in every aspect. A lost world is watching.

Proverbs 31:10-31 (KJV)

10: Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11: The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12: She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

9: In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10: But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

After the fall of man, Adam and Eve covered themselves to hide their nakedness.

Genesis 3:21 (KJV)

21: Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

God has told us how we are to dress and adorn ourselves.

Deut 22:5 (KJV)

5: The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

One evening last week end Janice and I were at the local Kroger picking up a couple of things. As we walked down an isle I noticed a young male and female walking ahead of us. She had on a short jacket and shirt and with the low jeans, was showing plenty of her back to us. As I rounded a corner I saw she was now facing me and not only were her pants low, they were unzipped as well and she was making sure her underwear was there for all who wanted to see to catch an eyeful. What kind of dad will let his daughter dress like a common harlot? It is bad enough at Kroger, but what about school and of all places, what about church?

I am sure the girl we saw at Kroger would have a come back similar to this: "If you don't want to see it, don't look." She was simply flaunting herself and did not realize how she was being portrayed.

Proverbs 30:20 (KJV)

20: Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.

There are three too's that we need to be aware as husbands and fathers:

Too much.

"Too much" is flamboyant - dressing like a hooker. The sin is not avoided if a woman uses "gold, pearls, and costly array" in order to look like a higher class of prostitute. In either case, a woman can send immodest signals even when everything is covered. Her immodesty consists not of what she is doing right then, but in what she is promising to do later. The language of her clothing subtly states that, no matter how much clothing there is, it comes off very easily.

Too Little.

"Too little" means too little covered up, leaving large amounts of cleavage, a vast expanse of thigh, a belly button or midriff that sort of thing open for close examination by strangers. Too often Christians assume that this kind of skin exposure is the only possible "modesty problem." This is not true, but it remains common nonetheless. This immodesty is compounded by girls who wear short skirts and who do not know how to sit like a lady, showing the world what's fore and aft.

Too tight.

"Too tight" is by far the most popular mode of disobedience among all females. They invite the whole world to stare at the physical evidence concerning exactly where her underwear starts and stops, along with the exact condition, location, and size of her breasts. But stare at them and see what the reaction is if you are noticed.

Parents are to love, shepherd and nurture their children but they are also commanded to teach and admonish them, because they are still children. They need direction. So many parents have the nurturing part down, but they abdicate the whole authority issue. They allow their daughters to go out and "go along with the crowd, express themselves and develop their own personalities," and when they come in looking like harlots, the parents throw up their hands and say, "She doesn't seem to think like we do about fashion."

It is important for these things to be discussed openly in the home. In this, a father and mother should take care to instruct their daughters on the dangers of self-deception, but dad and mom must be in one accord here. We are complicated beings, and our hearts are deceptive.

A young woman can be trying to turn heads, and be employing various sexual techniques to do so, and all the while be pretending to herself in her conscious thoughts that she is doing nothing of the kind. More than one young female dope has been consciously astonished at the sexual response that her subconscious has successfully created. And at that point, an indignant "What kind of girl do you think I am?" can easily be countered with an appeal to the obvious. And what is obvious has already been seen at Kroger and discussed here.

God has blessed me with four mentor pastors, one of which is Rev. Don Demars. Don has a wonderful wife, Theresa, and ten of the greatest Christ loving kids in the world. Don's three oldest Dusty, Allie and Casey off to the mission field. KC is in Romania, Dusty is in India and Allie is in Panama this coming Thursday.

They are dong exactly what Jesus instructs all Born Again Washed in the Blood of the Lamb Christians to do, they are complying with:
Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Please keep the three of them in your prayers and remember to pray for Don and Theresa too, imagine having three of your babies out in the world.
