Are You Prepared for Dying?

Friday March 11th, 2005
And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth": "Yea", saith the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." --Revelation 14:13 (KJV)

I am going to depart from the norm for this thought. The norm would find me asking if you were spiritually ready to go and be with CHRIST for eternity. I would like to ask you if you have physically prepared for your dying? What would happen if you were to be in an accident on the way home this evening and were killed? Have you made your house ready to go on without you? But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)

First and foremost in preparing for your death is go to God in prayer. Death is equal for all, no matter how much money you have or how much fame you bask in, you will someday die. Death is equal for all. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Hebrews 9:27 (KJV)

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 (KJV)

We know where we will spend eternity, however for the most part we all avoid thinking about the day when we actually do die. None of us want to leave the ones we love here, even knowing that what lies ahead is even better. Because of this, we avoid preparing for death.

Have you taken time to establish a line of succession in your family? Who will fill your shoes when you die? Moses appointed Joshua to take over at his time of death, Paul had both Timothy and Titus to take over from him and of course we all know the story of David and Solomon. Have you thought of the future and who will pick up where you have left off? In most cases it is the surviving spouse who fills in after the death of husband or wife. How prepared are they to take over from you?

Godly men leave legacies of righteousness and encouragement. And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that He did for Israel. Judges. 2:7 (KJV)

Preparing is one of the easiest things we can do and something that will be a legacy for our survivors to use. I am not going to list all that must be done, that is an individual decision. I am going to list some of the things that should be done.

First, organize every bit of information you can into one easy to access and use notebook. Use plastic document protectors to help put things where they need to be. This should contain all of the important papers you can gather such as: birth certificates, marriage license, bank accounts, life insurance information, name of an attorney you have worked with, your doctor's name, the name of a funeral director and any other information. The most important documents here will probably be your most recent will and any trust documents. You might also want to have end of life documents included (commonly called a living will).

Most of these are self explanatory and relatively easy to find or establish. However let me talk about the last one, a end of life directive. If you do have not very carefully spelled out your wishes and made them know to your loved ones you could very easily end up dead. With this death being long before your body was ready, but when others thought it was your time.

The decisions on maintaining your life will more than likely be made in a time of distress for the person making the decision. As an example - you are working in the yard and suffer a massive heart attack. Your wife watches you collapse to the ground. She runs to your side, sees you are in pain and breathing very shallowly. She runs back to the house and calls 911. The ambulance crew arrives and whisks you off to the hospital. She grabs the kids, jumps into the car and follows. The ambulance arrives ten minutes before she does. Who makes the decisions on "heroic" measures while she is on the way? The ER doctor who has no idea of your wishes makes them for you.

The previous was close to a worse case. There are others, like the business traveler who chokes on food while eating dinner. Who is there as his advocate?

We owe it to our families and to ourselves to let our wishes be known to them and then to have those wishes articulated into a legally binding document. You need to sit down with your spouse and pray over these decisions. I know what my wishes and what Janice's wishes are, but do you know what your wife or husband wants? It is not sufficient to know the wishes, they must be placed into a legally binding document or you stand a chance of being headline news like the current court battles in Florida. I must ask what right a judge has, who has never once visited Terri Schiavo, to determine whether she really wants to live or not?

I emphasize it again, you must take care to put all of this into a legally binding document. When Janice first started caring for her parents they did not have a will or any other documents. They had a hand written note but that was it. After a stroke and heart attack and some good heart to heart talks by us, they made a trip to a friend who is an attorney and now have a will and a end of life directive that names someone to be responsible for making these decisions if they are not physically capable of doing so.

Another consideration is age. How many of you are under 30 and feel like nothing can hurt you? I have a co-worker who just came back to work after burying his 17 year old son who was killed in a automobile crash. Their family was sure not prepared for dealing with his death.

Let me close this with another look at a reminder: But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)

The Lord bless you all and may He heal Mel's eyes and Myra's ears. May He be with Colby as he has now arrived at Paris Island and strted boot camp, A Christian babe amongst many a wolf. Amen.

May the Lord understand the importance of Mac, Cecily, Steve, and Rev. Jim Marstaller to this ministry. Lord I need them both healthy and able to continue to hold up their ends. Lord this cancer of Mac's is starting to get in the way, this ministry needs him whole, just a thought Lord, is all it will take, just a thought on Your part.

There is a young man, a veteran who suffers from some kind of chemical weapon exposure, in a Veterans hospital in Colorado, he is young, and he is Saved, yet his wife just abandoned him. Please pray for him, Lord, help him and deal with her and those who hurt him, we ask this of the Father in Your name Lord Jesus, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and bless you all, amen.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."

Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush, Sean and Michael have, they, Rush, Sean and Michael and their audiences need the Lord.

Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.

The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.

It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.

All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
