Heal Thyself

Friday March 24th, 2006

Have you ever noticed, that for some reason and in many cases, we cannot heal ourselves? I have seen many healing in my life, many healings that I knew came directly about because of prayer. A few years back, Pastor Warren Feustel and I went to visit his wife who was in a nursing home in the last stages of Parkinson's disease. The nursing home had called and told him that she had developed a severe case of shingles. Now for those who you who did better in science than I, you know that shingles is extremely painful.

Rev. Feustel and I went to the nursing home, anointed his wife with oil, laid our hands on her and prayed over her. Within that self same day, the shingles were gone. We prayed one prayer over and over again for his wife and that was that she would not suffer in pain. Helen, died, never suffering any pain, not even the day she had the shingles.

Is it Scriptural that one can heal others yet be unable to heal himself?

Before we look at that, first let me tell you that what I am about to show you and say, does have exceptions, I am one of them. Twice, once on July 10th. 1995 and again the Sunday before CHRISTmas 1998, my stomach burst. For those in the medical profession, I had a perforated ulcer. In both instances, the Lord answered my prayer. The first time, after nearly 7 hours of pain, I was in a little hospital in the backwoods of Maine, the surgeon on duty, one of only two, had never seen a perforated ulcer before, he, God bless him and I am not kidding, needed to look it up and see how to operate. Before finally being knocked out, I heard one of the operating team say, "This is academic, there is no way he lives through this."

I said "Lord, I'm leaving Cec in too much of a mess, maybe I deserve this, but Lord what about her?" I went on and promised that I would do whatever He wanted me to do if He would let me live. Ten days later I walked out of the hospital, I could not speak, both my vocal cords had been injured, as well as a nerve that controls the speech mechanism. I had gone in at 190 and came up weighing less than 140.

The second time, I and Rev. Lester Kringle prayed, we prayed that I would not suffer. I said to the Lord, "Lord, I cannot go through this again, I can not handle the pain, please, if You're not going to take me home, heal me and don't let me suffer." You see, this time, in that same little hospital was a surgeon who had 20 plus years as a Navy Surgeon attached to the Marines, this guy was an expert on stomach wounds, which is what a perforated ulcer simulates. In his years in Nam operating on Marines, he had seen more than his share of gut shot guys. He told me that I did not have enough blood to be knocked out, that this was going to hurt and that the most he could do is give me a little something or other to make me less uncomfortable. The next thing I knew, I woke up in my room, it was only and hour later, the Lord had put me to sleep so that I would not feel the pain of the camera going down my throat, and He healed my stomach. When they looked, there was nothing wrong with my stomach.

But, for the most part, those who can pray for the healing of others find it not so easy to heal themselves. In both of my cases, I had solid prayer warriors praying for me, first Ernie Lowell and the second time Lester Kringle.

But, why is that?

As Jesus hung on the cross, this happened: And they that passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save Thyself. If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross."

Likewise also the chief priests mocking Him, with the scribes and elders, said, "He saved others; Himself he cannot save. If He be the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let God deliver Him now, if He will have Him: for He said, "I am the Son of God." (Matthew 27:39-43)

What they were saying is "Hey, you saved and healed others, heal Yourself." Now, we know that Jesus had a perfectly good reason for not doing as they challenged, although anyone that thinks the Lord could not have saved Himself, has a screw loose. But to fulfill the Scripture requiring the Messiah to be hung on a cross, to be buried and to rise again after three days, the Lord had to allow Himself to be slaughtered.

Paul raised men from the dead, he saved a chief who was very, very sick and had been for a long time, yet, Paul could never heal himself of what he referred to as a thorn in the flesh.

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. (2 Corinthians 12:7&8)

Paul went to the Lord three times asking Him for healing from whatever this ailment is. Finally the Lord answered Paul telling him why he was suffering and why He wasn't healing him.

And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9 ACP/KJV)

Sometimes the Lord needs you healed, other times He needs you weak and sickly. But, since He created us for His pleasure, who are we to argue with or second guess the Lord? For at times even our very faith is tested as we fight off illness, family troubles and other "Thorns in the flesh".

Thank You Lord for letting me live, thank You for not letting Helen or I suffer, but Lord I would ask that You would open the door for me to go back and witness to those doctors who seem to just pass it off. That I can talk, after they said I never would. That my stomach was healed before their very eyes. And that I lived through it all. I bless Thee Lord and pray Thy blessing upon me and mine.

Amen.

God blessed America when she feared Him, now it appears, she may face His wrath.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.

Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush, Sean and Michael have, they, Rush, Sean and Michael and their audiences need the Lord.

Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.

The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.

It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.

All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
