Hey, it's not CHRISTmas, what's on the roof?
Luke 5:17-26
Keyword: The Chronological order of the life of Our Christ

In Romans chapter three, verse 23 we see the Apostle Paul faithfully writing what God tells him about sin; "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Today, as we study an account of what happened one day in the life of our Lord and Saviour, we see that all have sinned and God and only God can forgive us our sins.

17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as He(Jesus, God Almighty Himself) was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before Jesus. 19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when He saw their faith, He said unto him; Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?" 22&23 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (Jesus said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things to day." (Luke 5:17-26 ACP/KJV)

I think that every time I hear or read any discussion regarding this account, the focus is on the man who was healed of his physical infirmity. I am convinced that the physical healing was nothing in comparison to what is recorded in verse 17 and in verse 20.

Let us start by looking at verse 17 again: And it came to pass on a certain day, as He(Jesus, God Almighty Himself) was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

God Almighty is teaching, and there listening to Him are Pharisees and doctors of the law, men who are experts on the Old Testament Scriptures. There wasn't just a few of them, there must have been hundreds of them for they came from every town in Galilee, from towns and cities, villages and hamlets in Judea and even from Jerusalem itself. There were a lot of men, who through their education, should have known that the Man they were listening to was no ordinary preacher. Had these stiff necked fools been a little less impressed with themselves and each other, they would have been wonderfully rewarded, for look at the last eleven words of the verse. "and the power of the Lord was present to heal them." Jesus was there to heal them, to welcome them into His family, and as we will see in verse 20, Jesus made it known to them who He was and they knew, by what He said, just who He claimed to be. They knew that He was telling them that He is God.

Look at what Jesus said in verse 20. "man, thy sins are forgiven thee." Look how these fools respond; "Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?" Jesus through the miracles He had done thus far, that we have been studying since the beginning of the year ( How to separate the seeker from the non-seeker John 3:1-21 ), has proven beyond any doubt that He was truly special, that He had the power of God Almighty within Him, and here He is ready to heal them, not just physically, but spiritually as well, and they, instead of falling at His feet and embracing Him, instead reject Him, criticize Him, figuratively spit in His face.

So, God, knowing their hearts, but wanting to give them every opportunity to turn to Him, goes even further, He gives them a stunning example of the power of God, He reads their minds.

Jesus says to them: "What reason ye in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (Jesus said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house."

They, the Pharisees and doctors of the law, the very learned men of letters, knew that only God can forgive sins and they knew that only God can read minds. They also knew that God was with Jesus, for when we studied Nicodemus coming to Jesus back on February fourth, we saw the record of Nicodemus saying to Jesus "Rabbi, we know that Thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with him." Notice how Nicodemus, didn't say, I know, but said "we know", and since that time Jesus has raised the dead, healed lepers, commanded devils to come out of people, and healed numbers of people that could have reached into the hundreds of thousands, and more.

And here is God ready to heal them and they turn from Him once again. Yet the man who was healed knew and the common people knew, for he took up his bed and glorified God as he went home. The common folk were a little less impressed, but even they were filled with a fear of God and said "We have seen strange things to day."

As we will see later in our study, God does have a limit on how many chances He will give a person. We will later find that there comes a time when Jesus closes the door. No man knows when that will happen. No man knows when Jesus will say to Himself, "this is the last time I'm going to invite this guy into My family, if he says no now, he is dammed."

If you have not already given your life to Christ, don't procrastinate, do it today. Your salvation is your responsibility, your salvation is between you and Jesus. I can't do it for you, all I can do is tell you how to do it

Sometime in the not too distant future I want to talk to you men in the Militias, about Luke 20:25 and Matthew 24:24.

Lord, make my faith as that which I perceive the Samaritans to have had. Amen.

As you ponder today's Scripture, ponder also your own relationship with Christ. Are you a Samaritan or are you a Galilean?

Lord give us eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart attuned to Your word.

Men, let us strive to be men who follow Christ, and pray our wives will, as Peter's and Abraham's wives did, simply follow.

Nai erchomai kurios Iesous.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."
