Are You Great or Good?

Friday April 15th, 2005
Do you settle for the good in life or do you strive for the great? Do you want a great marriage, or will you settle for a good one? How about your kids, will you settle for doing a good job of raising them or do you want to do a great job? At work do you settle for goodness, when with a little effort you can reach greatness?

God wants us to be great and has given us all the tools we need to reach greatness in anything we do. There are over 69 chapters in the Bible that tell of the greatness of David. His life could have gone down a whole different trail had it not been that God had wanted him to be great. David moved from being a mere sheppard boy to King. A parallel to Moses going from being a Prince to being a sheppard. How did David do it? He didnít, God moved in his life and He can move in yours the same way.

Psalm 51 is one of my familyís favorites and shows the heart that David had as he went to God in prayer.

Psalm 51 (KJV).
1: Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2: Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3: For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4: Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified when Thou speakest, and be clear when Thou judgest.
5: Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6: Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part Thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7: Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8: Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice.
9: Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11: Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
12: Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit.
13: Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.
14: Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of Thy righteousness.
15: O Lord, open Thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth Thy praise.
16: For Thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: Thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.
18: Do good in Thy good pleasure unto Zion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19: Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

Three of the key verses in this chapter have been slightly changed and then placed to music and have made memorization of this much easier:

10: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11: Cast me not away from Thy presence oh Lord; take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
12: Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and renew a right spirit within me.

(I know some of the purists will object to the slight modifications, but they seem to make little if any difference in the actual meaning of the verses.

What happened when David took his problems to God? God answered them in ways that David probably did not think possible. I seriously doubt if anyone reading this had someoneís husband killed so he could continue sexual relationship with her as David did. But look at what happened when David prayed.

Setting our eyes high rather than settling for something less will help us to achieve our goals. Here are some examples from scripture of having a good heart and mind set. Simply follow the one true God and He will lead us to achieving these and other goals.

Colossons 3:1-3 (KJV)
1: If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2: Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3: For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Do you want to rise above? Then seek those things which are above. If you seek Godís Kingdom, the kingdoms of man will simply become irrelevant.

2 Chronicles 16:9 (KJV)
9: For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

Proverbs 3: 5-6 (KJV)
5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6: In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

I for one want to have God show Himself strong towards me and direct me on the paths. How do I do that? By having a heart that is prefect toward Him. Have I reached that? No. But I continually try to get there. Some days are easy and others are hard.

Jeremiah 17: 5-10 (KJV)
5: Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
6: For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.
7: Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
8: For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
9: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
10: I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Mark 7: 6-7 (KJV)
6&7: He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. Howbeit in vain do they worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

There is reminder after reminder and admonition after admonition in both the Old and New Testaments to keep your heart and mind set on God and trusting in Him. These come with the promise of reaping the benefits of bountiful blessings.

Keep these and other scriptures relating to receiving the blessing of God and you will continue to receive benefits far beyond all of your earthly expectations. This is Godís promise to us.

Never ever forget this: There aint no purgatory!

May the Lord understand the importance of Mac, Cecily, Steve, and Rev. Jim Marstaller to this ministry. Lord I need them both healthy and able to continue to hold up their ends. Lord this cancer of Mac's is starting to get in the way, this ministry needs him whole, just a thought Lord, is all it will take, just a thought on Your part.

There is a young man, a veteran who suffers from some kind of chemical weapon exposure, in a Veterans hospital in Colorado, he is young, and he is Saved, yet his wife just abandoned him. Please pray for him, Lord, help him and deal with her and those who hurt him, we ask this of the Father in Your name Lord Jesus, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and bless you all, amen.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."

Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush, Sean and Michael have, they, Rush, Sean and Michael and their audiences need the Lord.

Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.

The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.

It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.

All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
