Lost, 53,000 men and 2 Article of the Bill of Rights.
Tuesday May 27th, 2003
Over a three day period in July of 1863, the United States of America lost over 53,000 men. Lost in the mourning of these men, over 25,000 wearing blue and some 28,000 men wearing grey, was the death of Articles Nine and Ten of the Bill of Rights.
The place was Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the dates, July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. During those days, Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, commanding the forces of Maine, earned the only battlefield promotion to General of the war. He went on to be the holder of two stars by wars end and went on to be one of Maine's few distinguished, honest and honorable men to every hold the office of Governors. In Maine we have seen not one governor in the last sixty years with even one of General Chamberlain's characteristics.
Now while plenty can and has been written about how the actions of those three days resulted in the survival of the Union, it is not that which I would like you tho focus on today.
General George Washington was one of the two most loved and revered Generals in US history, the other, General Robert E. Lee, had a favorite field general, his name James Longstreet, General Longstreet said, regarding the men about to face each other, the men of both the Union and the Confederacy. "These men are seasoned veterans, the lazy, the shiftless, the deserters, cowards and scallywags are long since gone. These men will charge, defend and fight, even if there is no officer leading them, for these men know their duty." General Longstreet said this on July 3rd, 1863, just before what turned out to be the last day of the battle and the last true hope of the Confederacy, resulting in the death kneel of true States Rights.
It was on that day that two men, best of friends for years, now found themselves facing each other, in what to some is reminiscent of David and Absalom, only instead of father and son,it was more like two brothers. General Winfield Scott Hancock on the side of the Union and General Lewis A. Armistead fighting for the Confederacy.
While the war itself would go on for two more years, it is at Gettysburg that it became obvious that the Confederacy and the right of a State to secede fro the Union had lost. It was on the close of the battle on July 3rd, 1863, that the Federal Government of the United States buried Articles Nine and Ten of the Bill of Rights, for it was at the close of that day that any hope of any state ever exercising it's right to leave the Union, a Union created by the states, was dashed and dwtroyed.
Article IX: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
Article X: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.
Why do I bring this up today? It not the anniversary of the great battle that turned the tide of the Civil War, so why today? What we are about to read was first addressed to Israel by God, it was appropriate to our fledgling nation as well, and might very well be still unwinding here in the USA today, for not only have we not straightened up, we have become even more the servants of evil.
Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel;
I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying, 'at the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee': but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
And ye were now turned, and had done right in My sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and ye had made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name: But ye turned and polluted My name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. (Jeremiah 34:13-17)
The Lord God Creator of all things brought our fathers out of the lands of religious slavery in Europe, He gave them this great land we call the USA, He blessed it and was with us as we conquered it. He was with us as we wrested freedom and independence from our European masters. Yet over the next eighty years, we turned from Him, we continued slavery even when it was no longer financially necessary, we embraced the heathen theory of evolution, we withheld mens wages and enslaved them by adding usurious interest rates and taxes to their land holdings. And God has heard the cries of the slaves, the poor, and the downcast and has given us time after time to repent.
Instead of repenting, we have turned to offering between 1.5 and 3 million babies a year to satan as blood sacrifices, our courts and politicians have ruled that freedom of speech is to make pornography available while at the same time calling it a hate crime if we rebuke those who insult God, by using Scripture. We have raised homosexuality up, we send lesbians to the US Senate and elect them as officers of the states. We elect homosexuals to the US Congress, appoint them as judges, allow them to be teachers of our young and laugh when they commit crimes against nature and brag about it. We have made virginity and chastity a title to be scorned while ignoring the ever increasing deaths due to the pestilence caused by promiscuousness.
Yes God spoke those words to His people Israel, but on July 3rd, 1863, He took away the liberty of the states and proclaim(ed) a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, shall we repent as a nation? Shall we clean up our act, stop killing babies, turn form pornography, drugs, cheating, lying, stealing and enslaving or shall we look towards the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
God has always been faithful to forgive if only we turn to Him, not on our terms, but His. Men, the choice is yours.
Lord God Creator of all things, we give Thee thanks for giving us the second chance we do not deserve. We thank Thee Lord for our brave troops who are at this very instant freeing and liberating people through out the kingdom of satan. Lord we beseech Thee that Thou would send to our men a Paul, to preach Your word to them while they go to free those held captive by the forces of evil. Touch the Presidents heart Lord, lead him in a direction to send evangelist to our troops, give him the strength Lord to serve You, to use his office, that You have entrusted him with, as Commander in Chief to authorize and send solid evangelical Born Again Washed in the Blood of the Lamb Christian preachers to bring the Word of God to our troops, giving them both reason to fight and the Lord's plan of salvation. And put the end of abortion at the top of his agenda.
Lord Jesus, it is in Thy Sacred and Holy Name I pray, Amen.
