Yesterday at six in the morning our phone rang. My wife and I both know that at six in the morning, on a Sunday, it is one of two things, either a wrong number or very bad news. Unfortunately this time it was the right number with very bad news. It was our oldest son Danny. He told us that a half hour from his home in Western Albuquerque, New Mexico there had been a terrible accident and that his wife Theresa was dead.
To our shocked "What?", Danny told us that his wife and two of his three daughters had been driving back from Maryland where they had been visiting his other-in-law, Stacy the seventeen year old was driving when the baby dropped a toy on the floor of the back seat. Stacy, not wanting to wake her mom, reached back to pick up the toy and lost control of the Explorer. He went on and told us that three year old Kelly was fine and at home, Stacy was in the hospital with what appeared to be non-live threatening internal njuries, but that Theresa had died at the scene.
Now aside from the horrific shock of losing his wife, imagine the way it he received the news, someone came to his door and told him about both the accident and that his wife was dead. For most this someone would be the police. But it doesn't have to be, you could carry in your wallet a little card informing the police, medical people, ambulance drivers and everyone else that in the event of an emergency to first contact your Pastor.
As Danny cried and talked, my mind flashed back to May 21st, 1993 when a dear friend who happened to be the York Country Sheriff at the time, Mike Bemis, came to my door one Saturday night and told me that our youngest son, Andrew, had just died while driving his Jimmy. And while Mike was a dear friend, he wasn't a Pastor and just did not have the words not temperament for what we needed that night. Oh how I would have love to have had Pastor Jim Marstaller and his wife Myra be the ones knocking on the door that night.
How well I remember that night, back in 1993 it was around 11PM, Cecily and I were in bed when there came a knock on the door, as I put on my robe and turned on the porch light, I saw Sherif Mike Bemis standing on the porch, dressed in a suit, looking at the floor. When I opened the door, Mike said "Bob, I have some bad news...".
Nothing wrong with the way Mike handled it, but, this is what would have happened had it been Jim and Myra.
Jim knows where the spare key is, he is familiar the layout of our house and Cecily and I. He would have quietly let himself in, and made coffee, if we had woken up, he would have hugged me while Myra hugged Cecily, then he would have sat us down and through tears and prayer told us what had happened. Otherwise he would have woken us up with a cup of coffee and a gentle, calling of our names.
Gentlemen, we live in a very dangerous age, cars do over a hundred miles an hour, political correct gas saving nonsense has caused them to be made out of aluminum and plastic, idiots seeking to go to hell a bit early strap bombs around themselves, walk into malls and aboard busses, and blow themselves up in an attempt to kill Christians and Jews, we have a so called pandemic sitting on the door step that kills within 18 hours of the first symptoms, and the list goes on. All that in addition to the fact that everyone is going to die, every last one of us is going to be told that a loved one is dead.
There is nothing you can do about the death part, there is something you can do about who is going to make the announcement.
Ponder these words from Scripture and then ask yourself which is better equipped to help us through a time of trouble, our Pastor or the police?
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Who would it be easier to curse God with, the police or your Pastor? Who would it be easier to call for God's help with, your Pastor or the police?
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Is not a broken heart sickness? Are you not every bit as sick and distraught over the loss of a loved one as you would be with the flu or a broken bone?
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. (James 5: 12-20 ACP/KJV)
Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30 ACP/KJV) With your heart breaking, with your eyes full of tears as the understanding of what you have been told starts to surface, is it not time to turn to the creator? And who is it easier to do that with, the police or your Pastor? Who is going to comfort your wife and children more, a neighbor, the police or your Pastors wife?
Guys this is going to be a tough time for Danny and his daughters, especially Stacy. Please keep them in your prayers. Cecily and I will be leaving later today or first thing tomorrow morning, please keep us in your payers as well.
I will bee asking Steve and Pastor Jim to e-mail me a thought or two so that I can still psot thoughts while on the road, but, if I miss a day or two, don't get alarmed, just figure I couldn't get a connection.
Let me just close with this, one day every last one of us is going to leave this life. One day every last one of us is going to bury a loved one. There is no more important question than this: Are you and/or they Saved?
Jesus has made some things very clear. One, He is God! Two, He created all things. Three He will judge every last one of us. And four He has said that only those who are Born Again will see the Kingdom of God.
There aint no purgatory folks, there is but everlasting glory and pleasure in the Kingdom of God or eternal live in the lake of fire with satan and his slaves.
Let me paraphrase John 3:3 for you. And Jesus answered and said to Nicodemus, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, unless a person is Born Again he or she will go to hell for their aint no purgatory!.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus in whom we put our trust, our faith and our undivided worship be with us and you all, amen.
Sha'al shalowm Yruwshalaim.
Never ever forget this: There aint no purgatory!

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."
Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.
It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.
All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
