Dressing modestly to please the Lord

As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion. Proverbs 11:22 (KJV)

Modesty is probably one of the most controversial hot button topics among today's Christians. I have to ask "why is something that God commanded in Scripture questioned by His people?" We need to stop and ask how this great nation could have gone so far into the path of sinfulness in such a short period of time. At the turn of the last century women would have been arrested for wearing what women commonly wear to worship services today.

Before you get turned off by the thought of legalism, let's read a little about what God has to say about the topic:

First of all, the Bible very clearly tells us that God wants modest dress and actions.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (KJV)

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are an abomination unto the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 22:5 (KJV)

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28 (KJV)

Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. Romans 14:13 (KJV)

It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Romans 14:21 (KJV)

There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. Proverbs 30:12 (KJV)

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Isaiah 5:21 (KJV)

Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Romans 6:13 (KJV)

Here is what John Bunyan said about the immodest world he observed:

"Why are they for going with their…naked shoulders, and paps hanging out like a cow's bag? Why are they for painting their faces, for stretching out their neck, and for putting of themselves unto all the formalities which proud fancy leads them to? Is it because they would honor God? Because they would adorn the gospel? Because they would beatify religion, and make sinners to fall in love with their own salvation? No, no, it is rather to please their lusts…I believe also that Satan has drawn more into the sin of uncleanness by the spangling show of fine clothes, than he could possibly have drawn unto it without them. I wonder what it was that of old was called the attire of a harlot: certainly it could not be more bewitching and tempting than are the garments of many professors this day."

I wonder what he would say if he stood outside any mall today and watched what was being worn. Better yet, what about standing outside of a church on Sunday morning and seeing what was being worn by those coming to worship and see how we honor the 7th Commandment: Thou shalt not commit adultery.

I looked the 7th Commandment up in the Westminster's Larger Catechism to see what it had to say on the subject. Here is a direct quote:

What are the duties required in the seventh commandment?

A. The duties required in the seventh commandment are, chastity in body, mind, affections, words, and behavior, and the preservation of it in ourselves and others; watchfulness over the eyes and all the senses; temperance, keeping of chaste company, modesty in apparel; marriage by those that have not the gift of continency, conjugal love, and cohabitation; diligent labor in our callings; shunning all occasions of uncleanness, and resisting temptations thereunto.

What are the sins forbidden in the seventh commandment?

A. The sins forbidden in the seventh commandment, besides the neglect of the duties required, are, adultery, fornication, rape, incest, sodomy, and all unnatural lusts; all unclean imaginations, thoughts, purposes, and affections; all corrupt or filthy communications, or listening thereunto; wanton looks, impudent or light behaviour, immodest apparel… and all other provocations to, or acts of uncleanness, either in ourselves or others.

Guys, it is up to us to make sure our wives and daughters, the keepers of our homes, are afforded the opportunity to live a modest and chaste life.

Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
