Likewise greet the church that is in their house. (Romans 16:5a ACP/KJV)
So, you want to start a house church or to be more precise, you want to establish a place in your home where the church can meet to worship, honor and glorify God while enjoying His word, His Word and Christian fellowship. Ok, that is noble, no question about it, to establish a church in ones home is indeed a noble undertaking. But why? Why do you want to start a house church?
That my dear brothers is the very first thing you have to answer in order to go on to the steps to form a house church. Why do you want to have a church in your own home?
OK, if you have answered the question of why, let's go on and see what you do to establish that house church.
First, pray! The very first thing you must do, notice the word must, this is not a should do or could do step, this is a must do step. For to go to the Lord and pray for this house church is an absolute, for what you are doing is applying to the Lord to fil a position of evangelist. You should not, under any circumstances open a house church for the wrong reasons or without the approval of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Why? Because, the church is not yours, it is His, and you can not lead a service if the Holy Ghost is not with you, having directed you with your sermon for the service(s).
Think about that first question, why do you want to start a house church? Did your answer have something to do with your being unable to find a church already in existence, within your community, that preaches the Word of God? Keep in mind, your house church is probably going to want to associated itself with other churches in the area. Not as far as the preaching is concerned, but for Christian entertainment, youth activities, social activities, etc. Let me give you an example.
Within 15 miles of my house are many churches, two of which I am going to use as examples.
The Advent Christian church in Norway, Maine has a huge, solid Christian youth group, they have a great youth pastor and probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 kids in their youth groups. In Bridgton, Maine there is the Bridgton Christian Missionary Alliance church, they, last night, had Diane Muise sing. Diane is, if you haven't heard her, one of the very best Christian singers around. She also has to make a living, so she can not come sing at your house church for free. Your little house church can not exist for very long in a bubble, not if you are preaching Christ and not, some garbage about "only those that go here can get into heaven.". If you're going to open your doors to families, you'll need a youth group and places to go for Christian entertainment.
So, first, you must pray, you must go the Lord to make sure this is what He wants you to do. Don't expect an e-mail, just expect a peace to come over you regarding your desire to open a house church. Kind of like a very gentle pat on the head or a ruffling of your hair.
Next, are you old enough to be a preacher? Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased.
And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age,... (Luke 3:21-23a ACP/KJV)
So, are you thirty years old or above or do you figure that you don't need Jesus a an example? Remember, you are not going to be an assistant Pastor, you are going to be the Pastor.
Are you well grounded in Scripture? Not commentary, Scripture.
Now His (Jesus') parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and His mother knew not of it. But they, supposing Him to have been in the company (the party that traveled with them), went a day's journey; and they sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
And when they found Him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking Him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. (Luke 2:41-47a ACP/KJV)
As the preacher of a house church, you must be old enough to preach an you must understand God's word, the Holy Scriptures, for to preach anything else is to preach folly. Do you know what I am writing about when I say "preach the Word of God and the word of God."? Do you know why once the word, 'Word' is capitalized and one isn't?
For what is a preacher?
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14 ACP/KJV)
So, now, if you have prayed and you feel that you have found favor in God's eyes and have His permission to start a house church for Him and His people, you are thirty or older and well grounded in the word of God, the Holy Bible, what's next? How do you get a house church off the ground?
Well, a good place to start to build your house church is by looking at what God tells us preachers are for.
And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians (all non Hebrews) against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, "It is not reason(good and proper) that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables(do non preaching stuff). Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you(find) seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business(appoint as elders). But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word." (Acts 6:1-4 ACP/KJV)
Hey, were are back to prayer again. So what is the first thing you do in establishing a house of worship, for the Lord, in your house? Go and visit the people and families in your neighborhood, knock on every door and ask them if there is anything you can pray for them for. You are going to be amazed at the length of time this will take and the number of questions that will come up. Next week, do it again, the following week, do it again. Soon you will start to have people thanking you, for their prayers will start being answered.
Now this is important, when they thank you, I want you to be prepared to answer them correctly. I'm going to use as an example, the Lord Jesus Himself, I'm going to show you where when Jesus was complimented, he did not say thank you and take credit, but instead jumped into the important work of preaching the Word of God and Salvation.
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, "Rabbi, we know that Thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him." Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:1-3 ACP/KJV) Notice, Nicodemus started his conversation off by complimenting Jesus, Jesus didn't say thank you and take any credit, He instead went on to do God's work of leading Nicodemus to salvation.
And as far as those answered payers are concerned,
" Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise." (John 5:19 ACP/KJV)
"I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not Mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent Me. If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of Me; and I know that the witness which He (Holy Spirit) witnesseth of Me is true." (John 5:30-32 ACP/KJV)
So, when you are thanked for prayers answered, use it as an opportunity to preach God's word and God's Word and God's plan of salvation. Maybe by asking them if they would like to learn how to pray. For that leads into the next step, a weekly Bible study. Remember, you didn't answer their prayers, God did.
Once you have a weekly Bible study with four or five people coming, then you are ready to start holding regular weekly services, remember, you may want to hold them some time other than Sunday morning. There are those who work on Sunday who may want to attend service, but can't because of work load or schedule, but could attend on Monday or some other morning.
I honestly believe that as the Church started out in house churches, so will this age end. With the only true churches being held in secret, in house churches. For we are taught in the Scriptures that there will come a time when it will be just about impossible, if not impossible to find and hear the un-watered down, un- adulterated Scriptures. Do you know where that is prophesied? You need to.
Oh Lord God Creator of all heaven and earth, please, I beseech Thee, help these men who wish to do Thy will, by preaching Thy word, to succeed with as little pain and suffering as possible. Help their wives to be helpers, not hindrances Lord, for in this time, we have enough stumbling blocks as it is. In Your name Lord Jesus I pray, amen.
May the Lord understand the importance of Mac and Cecily to this ministry. Lord I need them both healthy and able to continue to hold up their ends. Lord this cancer of Mac's is starting to get in the way, this ministry needs him whole, just a thought Lord, is all it will take, just a thought on Your part.
There is a young man, a veteran who suffers from some kind of chemical weapon exposure, in a Veterans hospital in Colorado, he is young, and he is saved, yet his wife just abandoned him. Please pray for him, Lord, help him and deal with her and those who hurt him, we ask this of the Father in Your name Lord Jesus, amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and bless you all, amen.
The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.
I would also like to thank the Lord that Dorothy has a large print Bible, while I am not to happy about the way she got it, I am pleased that she has it. And now my prayer is that she will read it and the Lord will let the Holy Spirit guide her to understanding it. Amen.
The Lord be with you all and please keep me in your prayers. I have some very important decision to make over the next few weeks or months, I need your prayers. Amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."
Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush and Michael have, they, Rush, Michael and their audiences need the Lord.
Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.
It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.
All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
