Why must Christians Suffer with Pain?

Friday August 26th, 2005
By: Steve Burzlaff

1 Peter 5: 1-11 (KJV)

1: The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3: Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4: And when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5: Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time:
7: Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.
8: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10: But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11: To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

When you read this, there are millions who are suffering and asking: "why is this happening to me?" "Why is all mighty God allowing me or my loved one to suffer with the pain of (fill in the blank)?""

There are several different types of suffering we true Born Again Christians face. The first one we will look at is physical pain. I have probably never known real physical pain in my body. I have had a broken bone or two, stepped on a large nail when I was five and other scrapes and cuts. The worst was undoubtedly my run in with a barb wire fence in our neighbor''s sheep pasture when I was seven years old. I was crawling through the fence when one of the barbs got me in the calf. I hobbled the couple of hundred yards to my house crying and bawling for my mother. We had found that I was allergic to tetanus vaccines when I had stepped on the nail a few years earlier, so mother simply grabbed a bottle of alcohol and poured it on. Wow! I knew pain for a few minutes.

Even the pain of the alcohol on the slash in my calf (I still have a nice sized scar there 48 years later) was nothing compared to the pain suffered by others. Patients who have morphine drips to dull the pain. I saw that with both of my in-laws when they had bypass surgery. Now, I am seeing it in my mother-in-law who is in the last stage of Parkinson''s Disease. She has developed sores on her feet, legs and back that are ulcerated and bleed constantly. When we change the dressings on them she starts with sobbing and ends with moaning and whimpering. We use pain killers for her, but the drugs are simply not enough. Her physician has told us that we need to be preparing for the pain to become worse and worse as the sores will not heal, but only become larger.

1 Peter 4:13-17 (KJV)

13: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
14: If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part He is evil spoken of, but on your part He is glorified.
15: But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
16: Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
17: For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

As we suffer or as we comfort our loved ones who are suffering, we must always remember that through the love He showed us through the death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God overcame and conquered sin, suffering, and death. That is the good news of salvation.

As I sat in the living room of my in-laws home this evening and saw the live-in care giver Robin, tenderly unwrapping the bandages covering Janice's mother's feet and legs cleansing the sores and then replacing the bandaging she was sobbing with pain. I could do nothing but offer prayers that the suffering would come to an end.

We must remember that once there was a time when suffering and sorrow did not exist. When God first created man everything was perfect. Adam knew no sickness, he did not know of pain, or sorrow. It was God's plan for man to live in peace, never having to see and experience sorrow and pain and suffering. However man chose the way of satan, rather than the way of God, and sorrow, pain and suffering came into the world.

In Genesis 3:16-19 God reveals to Adam and Eve the consequences of sin.

16: Unto the woman He said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17: And unto Adam He said,
Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, 'Thou shalt not eat of it': cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

God told Adam and Eve that they would now experience suffering and even death. We must understand the suffering and sorrow that we today is not the work of an unjust God; it's the consequences of sin. We must always remember that we suffer because we are sinners. Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. - 1 Peter 5:10 KJV)

PLease pray for Danny Calhoun, Danny and Theresa Gilpatrick, Seth Winslow, George Robert and this ministry and all involved with it.

Lord Jesus, please give women a love for their babies, from the moment of conception on, let them love them I pray Thee. Amen.

The Lord bless you all and may He heal Mel's eyes and Myra's ears. May You be with Colby as he is now out of boot camp and into Fleet Marine Corps, A Christian babe amongst many a wolf.

And Lord I ask You to bless those who bless me and mine tenfold for the blessing they are to me.

May the Lord understand the importance of Mac, Cecily, Steve, and Rev. Jim Marstaller to this ministry. Lord I need them both healthy and able to continue to hold up their ends. Lord this cancer of Mac's is starting to get in the way, this ministry needs him whole, just a thought Lord, is all it will take, just a thought on Your part.

There is a young man, a veteran who suffers from some kind of chemical weapon exposure, in a Veterans hospital in Colorado, he is young, and he is Saved, yet his wife just abandoned him. Please pray for him, Lord, help him and deal with her and those who hurt him, we ask this of the Father in Your name Lord Jesus, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and bless you all, amen.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.

The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."

Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush, Sean and Michael have, they, Rush, Sean and Michael and their audiences need the Lord.

Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.

The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.

It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.

All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
