Last week I sent an email to many of you, asking a question, and asking you to answer it in a 100 words or less. I got some very interesting answers. Most of which really impressed me.
If you were approached by either an unsaved person or a not too knowledgeable Christian and asked the below question, how , in 100 words or less, would you answer that person? Question: "Since the New Testament is all about Jesus and how to be a Christian, why do we need the Old Testament? What purpose is the Old Testament?"
One thing we need to understand about the Bible is that every question we could possibly have, about it and it's uses, are in it. So, why do we need the Old Testament?
We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities(Spiritual weaknesses) of the weak, and not to *please ourselves. * not to please ourselves, we are not to help weaker brothers and sisters in understanding the Word of God to make ourselves look smart or to look for compliments, but to further the kingdom of God, knowing that the one we help, will be stronger, better grounded in the word of God and more able to do the Lord's work.
Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification. Help his neighbor, to better understand God's word.
For even Christ pleased not Himself; but, as it is written, THE REPROACHES OF THEM THAT REPROACHED THEE FELL ON ME (See Psalm 69:9).
For whatsoever things were written aforetime (before Christ, the Old Testament) were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (Romans 15:1-4 ACP/KJV)
Notice how God anticipated our question? How, He, some 1950 years ago knew we would one day want to know what purpose the Old Testament plays today, so He gave the answer to Paul so that we would have it. Notice in verse three, Paul uses Psalm 69 as part of his answer and as an example of the need of the Old Testament. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten Me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached Thee are fallen upon Me. (Psalm 69:9 ACP/KJV)
Verse nine of Psalm sixty-nine is prophetic, therefore it is a must fulfill for one to be the Christ. You see, the Thee is God the Father, the Me is God the Son. One of the things Jesus had to do to be recognized as the Messiah, was to have the hatred of them that hate God the father fall upon Him. In other words, those that hated God the Father had to also hate God the Son.
Look at what Jesus said to those who did not know Him as the Messiah in John chapter eight;
Then said they unto Him, "Where is Thy Father?" Jesus answered, Ye neither know Me, nor My Father: if ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father also. (John 8:19 ACP/KJV)
And to those who did know Him, The Lord said this:
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Thomas saith unto Him, "Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way?" Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me. If ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father also: and from henceforth ye know Him, and have seen Him. (John 14:1-7 ACP/KJV)
So, Jesus in fulfilling Psalm 69, verse 9, has the same enemies that God th Father has, the same ones who do not know God the Father, do not Know who Jesus is. The same ones who do know who He is also know the Father.
Read the rest of John 14 and 15 and you will further understand.
So, why do we have the old Testament? The single biggest reason we, as Born Again Washed in the Blood of the Lamb Christians, absolutely need the Old Testament, is to convince ourselves that Jesus is indeed the Christ, the Messiah. For throughout the Old Testament are prophecies, which are the requirements for the Christ to prove Himself by fulfilling.
One more example. In John Chapter three, Jesus was having a conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who was also a member of the Jewish ruling council, the Sanhedrin. In part, Jesus said;
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:14&15 ACP/KJV) Jesus is telling Nicodemus that He will be crucified. Nicodemus, as a Pharisee, was familiar with what we call the Old Testament, he knew exactly what Jesus was talking about, but do you?
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, "Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread."
And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us."
And Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. (Numbers 21:5-9 ACP/KJV)
Are you starting to understand the importance of the Old Testament? Do you understand that we do not accept Jesus as the Christ simply because He tells us He is, we know He is by the things He did in fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy of what He who is the Christ must do to prove Himself.
Do you realize that what we consider the very first prophesy in the Bible, Genesis 3:14&15, is only one half fulfilled. Jesus has fulfilled His half, and we as Christians, must wait for the second half to be fulfilled.
In Genesis 3, verses 14&15 we read this: And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; It (the trinity) shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His(the Messiah, the Christ) heel.
When Jesus was taken, beaten, scourged, spit upon, crucified, stabbed, died and was buried, He fulfilled having His heal bruised. When He arose from the dead, it began the official countdown for part two, Christ preparing to bruise satan's head. Not kill him, not end his suffering, but compar in your mind if you would, what bruise his head must mean if what Jesus went though is nothing more than a bruised heal.
John knows, he understands, for look at what he says at the end of Revelation. "Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:20b)
May the Lord our God bless every one of you, may He give to you the Bread of Life, may He come quickly.
May the Lord understand the importance of Mac and Cecily to this ministry. Lord I need them both healthy and able to continue to hold up their ends. Lord this cancer of Mac's is starting to get in the way, this ministry needs him whole, just a thought Lord, is all it will take, just a thought on Your part.
There is a young man, a veteran who suffers from some kind of chemical weapon exposure, in a Veterans hospital in Colorado, he is young, and he is saved, yet his wife just abandoned him. Please pray for him, Lord, help him and deal with her and those who hurt him, we ask this of the Father in Your name Lord Jesus, amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with and bless you all, amen.
The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.
I would also like to thank the Lord that Dorothy has a large print Bible, while I am not to happy about the way she got it, I am pleased that she has it. And now my prayer is that she will read it and the Lord will let the Holy Spirit guide her to understanding it. Amen.
The Lord be with you all and please keep me in your prayers. I have some very important decision to make over the next few weeks or months, I need your prayers. Amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."
Pray for my friend Mac, pray for Rush and Michael Savage. While the Lord does not need the platforms and audiences that Rush and Michael have, they, Rush, Michael and their audiences need the Lord.
Pray for the President, pray for Attorney General John Ashcroft, pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
The Lord God of the Universe, Messiah Y'shua be with you all, amen.
It is better to be a horse fly in the stables of the Lord Jesus than the CEO of hell.
All Scripture quoted, in both sermons and daily thoughts, except when done by a guest, is from the ACP/authorized 1611 King James Version. The words in red are those quotes of God the Son, the Lord Jesus and the words in purple are those qoutes spoken directly by God the Father and the words in this sickly greenish color are of satan. But all of the Bible is spoken by God and should be viewed as God's handbook for us to run our lives by 2 Timothy 3:16.
