What did they say? Acts 2
In Acts chapter two, we see a very amazing thing happen. We see the Apostles along with, depending on any difference in time between the end of Chapter one and the beginning of chapter two, over 100 other men plus Mary the mother of Jesus, His brothers, and some other women, in an upper room praying, praying but not in Hebrew.
Suddenly the Holy Spirit comes with a loud wind, and He hovers over them in the form of cloven tongues,and they proceed to speak in tongues, foreign languages.
Now let us read the very word of God on this subject.
Acts Chapter Two
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they (the Apostles and those with them in chapter one of Acts) were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto (over, as suspended above their heads) them cloven (split, as a animals hoof is split in two) tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon (over, as suspended above their heads) each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling (visiting) at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad (told around Jerusalem that these men where speaking in different languages and had fiery cloven tongues over their heads), the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, "Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God."
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, "What meaneth this?" 13 Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, "Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day (9AM). 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS IN THE LAST DAYS, SAITH GOD, I WILL POUR OUT OF MY SPIRIT UPON ALL FLESH: AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS: 18 AND ON MY SERVANTS AND ON MY HANDMAIDENS I WILL POUR OUT, IN THOSE DAYS, OF MY SPIRIT; AND THEY SHALL PROPHESY: 19 AND I WILL SHEW WONDERS IN HEAVEN ABOVE, AND SIGNS IN THE EARTH BENEATH; BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOUR OF SMOKE: 20 THE SUN SHALL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS, AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THAT GREAT AND NOTABLE DAY OF THE LORD COME: 21 AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS, THAT WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED. (Joel 2:28-32)
22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 *Whom God hath raised up * see John 10:15-18a, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that He should be holden of it. 25 For David speaketh concerning Him, * see John 10:15-18a.
I FORESAW THE LORD ALWAYS BEFORE MY FACE, FOR HE IS ON MY RIGHT HAND, THAT I SHOULD NOT BE MOVED: 26 THEREFORE DID MY HEART REJOICE, AND MY TONGUE WAS GLAD; MOREOVER ALSO MY FLESH SHALL REST IN HOPE: 27 BECAUSE THOU WILT NOT LEAVE MY SOUL IN HELL, NEITHER WILT THOU SUFFER THINE HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION. 28 THOU HAST MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; THOU SHALT MAKE ME FULL OF JOY WITH THY COUNTENANCE. (Psalm 16:8-11)
29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that His soul was not left in hell, neither His flesh did see corruption (did not rot). 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, THE LORD SAID UNTO MY LORD, SIT THOU ON MY RIGHT HAND, 35 UNTIL I MAKE THY FOES THY FOOTSTOOL. (Psalm 110:1) 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, *whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. *note Peter says crucified, not killed, again see John 10:15-18a.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said unto them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, "Save yourselves from this untoward generation." 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:1-47 ACP/KJV
In Acts chapter two we have just read of some very amazing happenings. The Apostles and others are praying and suddenly the Holy Spirit is there. He hovers over them in the form of cloven tongues, preceded by a loud wind, and they proceed to speak in tongues, foreign languages. The next thing we know, verse 41, three thousand give their lives to Christ and according to verse42-47, they became solid Born Again Washed in the Blood of the Lamb Christians, not wishy washy good time charlie small c Christians.
So, what did these folks say? What did they say in the tongues of men from all over the known world that so impressed these 3000 that with only a bit of exhortation from Peter, they took their lives from satan and, using the free will God gave them, gave their lives to Christ?
Folks, I believe I know the answer to that, not by speculation, but by study of God's Holy and Absolute Word, the Holy Bible.
Let us start by looking at some key verses, verses 1-11
1-3 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4-6 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7-11 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, "Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God."
They heard the "wonderful works of God" in their own languages, as God the Holy Spirit directed them to speak. What would the Holy Spirit have them talk about?
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you. And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on Me; Of righteousness, because I go to My Father, and ye see Me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you." Jesus speaking in John 16:7-14 with emphasis on verses 7 and 14a.
In these verses we see that Jesus is telling His that He is going away, but when He does He will send God the Holy Spirit to Sheperd them in His place, and that God the Holy Spirit will tell them more about Jesus, He, the Holy Spirit, will not talk of Himself, but of Jesus.
But, what are the "wonderful works of God" that are all about Jesus that those 3000 heard in their own languages that made them fall down and become Born Again Washed in the Blood of the Lamb Christians? Well just as Jesus gave us the perfect example of what being Born Again means in Luke 23:39-43 by telling us what the thief on the cross who got saved did, so He has also given us the answer to what they heard in Luke 24:13-32.
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden(mentally unknowing or unseeing) that they should not know Him.
And He said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto Him, "Art Thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?"
And He said unto them, What things? And they said unto Him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and have crucified Him. But we trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done.
Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; And when they found not His body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that He was alive. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but Him they saw not."
Then He said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.
And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and He made as though He would have gone further. But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as He sat at meat with them, He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, "Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He opened to us the scriptures?" Luke 24:13-32 ACP/KJV
What did Jesus tell Cleopas and the other man on the road to Emmaus that got them out of their depression, out of the feeling of loss and got them fired up for the Lord, so fired up that they, in the middle of the night, walked back to Jerusalem in the dark?
He explained to them all the things the Old Testament demanded that the Christ do to prove that He was in fact the Christ. Things impossible for any other than God Himself to do, things impossible for any created, man, angel, or beast to do. He said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.
Sometime in the not too distant future I want to talk to you men in the Militias, about Luke 20:25 and Matthew 24:24.
Lord, make my faith as that which I perceive the Samaritans to have had. Amen.
As you ponder today's Scripture, ponder also your own relationship with Christ. Are you a Samaritan or are you a Galilean?
Lord give us eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart attuned to Your word.
Men, let us strive to be men who follow Christ, and pray our wives will, as Peter's and Abraham's wives did, simply follow.

The difference between a true preacher and a false preacher comes down to this. The true preacher uses God's word to convict of sin, the false preacher twist God's word to justify sin. The Lord our God, Christ Jesus be with you always, amen.
The Lord our God, Christ Jesus, be with you all and please keep your pastor and me in your prayers. Amen. My prayer daily is "Lord please bless those tenfold who bless me."
Pray for me, pray for all those who open their mouths or take pen in hand in an effort to sway public opinion.
